Congratulations to Nick Liu on being selected to attend the NISOA Men’s College Cup Referee Seminar this past month!
Nick was one of just 30 referees nationwide invited to this elite seminar, held alongside the Men’s College Cup. Over four days, he participated in high-level classroom sessions and on-field mentoring led by FIFA referees, NCAA assignors, referee coaches, and performance experts.
Key themes and takeaways included:
- Intentional goal-setting and treating training, nutrition, and recovery as a lifestyle
- Using precise, purposeful language to manage players effectively
- The importance of positioning, courage, and accuracy in big decisions
- Assignor expectations around professionalism, honesty, availability, and preparation
- Balancing flow vs. control and knowing when to protect the game
- Fueling, hydration, and meal timing as foundations of performance
- Clear, calm communication during video review situations
This was a tremendous opportunity and a reflection of Nick’s continued commitment to development, professionalism, and excellence. We appreciate him sharing his experiences and bringing this knowledge back to our referee community.
